Day 3
May 4, 2001

Well we picked up and headed out to Jackson Hole Wyoming.
Got an early start so we could take the scenic route.

The green line was our route and as you can see it cut across the bottom corner of Idaho.

First stop was the American West Heritage Center.
It is a 160 acre hands-on living history site that interprets life from 1820-1920.

Most of it was closed till the end of May, so we did not get to see much.
We did finally get to see a buffalo.

Moving down the road the scenery started looking like the old west.

Cache National Forest

Cache Creek

This was a big treat. Bear Lake is at 6,000 ft and this picture does not do it justice.
It's even bluer than shown.

Next to the lake is Garden city established in 1877 by pioneers. The area has a climate perfect for growing raspberries. Few visitors can pass through without enjoying a fresh raspberry shake.
We tried but failed to make it through. It was our lunch.

 First time for this state.

Where are the potatos?

Ok got to get Hat and boots on for this state.

A history stop.

We stopped in Afton Wy. to check out this periodic spring.
What they did not tell us was it was 5 miles up a dirt and bumpy road and then
we had to hike up hill 3/4 mile to it. Then it was buried it a snow avalanche. But we made it.
This is how it works. When not buried in snow the water shoots up like a geyser, only it is spring water.

All we could see was it rushing out from under the snow.

But you can see how much fun we had hiking up and back from it.
The weather got much nicer today, about 60 and no wind.
We got in Jackson Hole about 5:30pm and had no reservations. We looked around at some of the places we saw on the internet. Those pictures of these motels must have been taken about 20 years ago. Glad we did not make reservations there. We spotted a new Best Western Resort and decided to check it out. We walked in and they told us they had a suite left that is normally 160 but could have it for 80 a night.
We made the right choice. This place has it all.
Planning on staying here 2-3 nights.
